When it comes to Scrum, there are not only three pillars that guide the process (Transparency, Inspection, and Adaptation), but there are also five fundamental Values that are essential to its success.
1) The first value is Focus – With an iterative-incremental and time-boxing approach, the Scrum team is encouraged to focus on only a few tasks at a time, ensuring that they prioritize what is most important at that particular moment. By gaining experience from current work and leveraging that knowledge for future tasks, the team can deliver valuable items sooner.
2) The second value is Openness – Collaboration and transparency are key to checking progress, identifying challenges, and addressing any issues that arise. By working together, sharing feedback, and learning from each other, the team can continuously improve.
3) The third value is Courage – Scrum teams must be willing to do what is necessary to meet the project/sprint goal, even when facing challenges or taking on greater risks. Acknowledging that change is inevitable, Scrum teams must be prepared to shift direction and share all relevant information with stakeholders to take necessary actions.
4) The fourth value is Commitment – Each Scrum Role is committed to the “Scrum Team” goals, rather than individual achievements. By having greater control over selecting tasks and considering other factors, the team is more committed to success, which fosters an environment of trust.
5) The fifth value is Respect – Scrum teams must work together and take collective ownership of the results of their decisions and actions. Sharing successes, failures, and challenges is critical to building respect for each other’s skills, experience, and opinions. Embracing diversity is essential to the team’s success while using Scrum.
In addition, Scrum recognizes that open interactive conversations are more valuable than top-down directives. It also encourages teams to stop doing anything that is not adding value to the ultimate customers. The key to success is not to do more work faster; the key is to be smarter by generating more value from less work and delivering it sooner.
By embracing these five values and understanding the importance of openness, respect, commitment, focus, and courage, Scrum teams can work together effectively, make decisions quickly, and deliver valuable items that meet their customers’ needs.
